How is your body changing after having your baby?

Sol Pilates

During Pregnancy, your body has gone through a significant amount of physical and emotional changes. Now that your baby is outside your body, some of these changes will persist for a while as your body slowly recovers from birth, after birth,

  • 80% of women will experience diastasis recti (abdominal separation.) Your core muscles will start to recover gradually although without a core strength programme they might never go back to their pre-pregnancy state. If you had a C-section you have gone through abdominal surgery and recovery can take a while.
  • If you had a vaginal delivery, your pelvic floor muscles have gone through a significant amount of stress. If you had a C-section your pelvic floor muscles haven’t suffered as much but these were under pressure during your Pregnancy.
  • Your centre of gravity will change overnight once you give birth but going back to your pre-Pregnancy posture will take some time. Your ribcage has elevated during Pregnancy and might never go back to its former position leading to back pain.
  • You are constantly bending over when you are feeding or rocking your baby to sleep. This repetitive movement is putting strain on your neck, shoulders and upper back. Also lifting weight and twisting as you carry your baby plus all the baby stuff (car seat, pram, baby bag, etc) might put strain on your lower back if your core muscles are weak.
  • The Relaxin hormone is still present on your body especially if you are breastfeeding, leading to ligament laxity, so you need to be careful when you do your stretches to avoid injury. Pelvic girdle pain might continue for a while.
  • Your life has turned upside down (in a good way!) and you are now responsible for a little human which sometimes can take atoll physically and mentally on you. Chances are while the baby gets all your attention, your needs might get forgotten.

Our Postnatal Classes Can Help You!

Sol Pilates

At Sol Pilates our Postnatal Pilates classes are a safe form of exercise that will help you with your Postnatal recovery. Here is how regular Postnatal Pilates classes can help you to navigate motherhood.

  • Helping to recover your core strength with targeted exercises and in the case that you developed diastasis recti (abdominal separation) helping to reduce the gap gradually.
  • Regaining your pelvic floor strength to help with problems like stress incontinence, prolapse, etc.
  • Strengthening your upper body to help you with the early demands of motherhood.
  • Releasing tension on your neck, shoulders and upper back that you may develop from bending when you are feeding the baby, carrying, kneeling etc.
  • Reducing lower back pain and pelvic girdle pain by increasing overall core strength.
  • Improving your posture by strengthening the deep core muscles (abs, glutes and deep back muscles) at the same time you tone your body and get back into shape.
  • Bonding with your baby while you exercise, as some of the exercises can be practise with your baby. We like to start them early in Pilates!
  • Meet other local ‘new mums’ that are also starting to navigate motherhood.
