Pilates for Pregnant Women
Are you wondering what is the best way to stay active during Pregnancy?
Postural changes during Pregnancy
How is your body changing during pregnancy?
During Pregnancy you will go through physical and emotional changes. As your body prepares to nourish and carry your baby, this is what you might expect. During Pregnancy,
- Your centre of gravity will change as your baby grows leading to postural changes and putting strain in your lower back.
- The hormone Relaxin will make your ligaments looser to prepare your pelvis for birth. This will affect other joints in your body and could cause pelvic girdle pain or you might be more prone to injury in other joints (knees, hips, shoulders, etc)
- Your breathing will be affected too. You might experience mild shortness of breath as the Pregnancy progresses
- As the baby grows the pressure on your pelvic floor muscles and core muscles will increase. 80% of women experience diastasis recti or separation of the abdominal wall during their Pregnancy and many will experience pelvic floor issues after birth
- The cocktail of hormones released by your body to prepare for birth might make you feel more anxious and overwhelmed. As your Pregnancy progresses you might struggle to have a good night sleep.
Our Pregnancy Classes Can Help You!
At Sol Pilates our Pregnancy classes are a safe form of exercise that will help you through all the stages of Pregnancy and beyond. Here is how a regular Pregnancy Pilates class can help you navigate Pregnancy:
- Increasing your body awareness and learning breathing and relaxation techniques to calm your nervous system.
- Strengthening your core muscles to help your body adapt to the increasing load as your baby grows and encouraging a good posture to avoid lower back pain.
- Practicing pelvic floor exercises to learn how to engage and release your pelvic floor in preparation for birth.
- Encourage a healthy range of movement in your joints and symmetry in your body when you exercise to stay away from pelvic girdle pain.
- Learning birthing positions and exercises to encourage the baby to adopt the optimal position for birth.
- Meet other local ‘mums to be’ so you can share your experiences and make new friends.
“I decided to try Pilates for the first time during pregnancy and absolutely loved it; I have now returned to the postnatal class with my little boy. Silvia is a great, patient and flexible teacher. I would absolutely recommend that you give her classes a try!”
Chloe, mum of one, Amersham
“I’ve recently had some 1-2-1 sessions with Silvia to help get me stronger and more mobile whilst heavily pregnant. She’s been great at adapting each session to my developing pregnancy limitations plus pre-existing conditions. She’s been patient and clear in her instructions. I definitely plan to have more sessions in the future.”
